Key Psychological Defenses Of A Procrastinator

In this post, we will describe the main psychological defenses that procrastinators use to delay their work in one way or the other.

  1. Procrastinators’ Sadness is actually a psychological defense mechanism. Chronic procrastinators become sad because if you are sad and you are not working on what you are supposed to do, it gives the impression that you have tried everything possible and you have put your maximum effort and still things did not work. Therefore, you are sad and you deserve a little free time or entertainment or something other than work. The sadness works like a layer of defense from the need to work.
  2. Sometimes when you have to work, you pick up some larger project and you attempt to do that. This is to avoid the immediate work on hand and make people feel that you are going after a difficult project and, therefore, you don’t have the time for regularities and discipline in life. This is nothing but a layer of psychological self-defense to delay work.
  3. Procrastinators want their self-esteem to be protected by making it look like they lack in the effort but not in ability. So, if they are not sure if they will succeed in something, they will delay it until the last minute. This enables them to get a psychological victory that whatever work they did was achieved with a limited effort and their actual ability is very high and given enough time they would have done all the work with flying colors. It is very difficult to accept that you tried your all and everything and it was not enough.
  4. I have never seen a disciplined person unhappy. They still go about by their routine and try to make things better. It shows discipline actually makes you happier. But procrastinators don’t like the fact that there are actual people who work with discipline and are very happy. So, they start giving names like heartless robots and soulless stones to disciplined people and judge them in their defense.
